Adhesives, sealants & lubricants — how we pick and size them
Half a tube of adhesive thrown away is the most common waste in any workshop, so we pack small. Cyanoacrylate for fast bonds, epoxy in twin syringes, contact adhesive for sheet work, fabric glue, jewelry glue with a precision tip, hot melt sticks by the kilo. Silicone sealant in clear, white and black for kitchen and bathroom joints. Thread locker in low and medium strength. PTFE tape for plumbing threads.
What sits next to what
Tapes run from double sided foam and nano tape to kapton, masking and self fusing silicone. Lubricants are the quiet end: light machine oil for hinges and sewing machines, white lithium grease for slides, silicone spray for rubber seals, dry PTFE for anything that must not collect dust. Read the surface before the label — most adhesive failures are a surface problem, not a glue problem.
Questions we get at the glues shelf
Which glue holds metal to wood?
Two-part epoxy, and nothing else in this bay beats it for that pair. Cyanoacrylate is faster but brittle wherever the joint flexes.
How long does silicone sealant take to cure?
Skin in under an hour, full cure in a day for a normal bead. Thicker beads take longer, and the tube gives the figure for the depth it was tested at.
Is the tape residue-free on paint?
The low-tack masking tapes are, for a few days. Nothing here is safe left on a sunny painted surface for a month, whatever the roll claims.
