Fabric & sewing

The hardware end of sewing: fasteners, trims, clips and blades, in counts that suit a run of garments rather than one hem.

The fabric & sewing aisle at the PATIKIL counter

Fabric & sewing — how we pick and size them

Sewing is mostly fabric and a little hardware, and the hardware is where our bench lives. Snap fasteners in 10mm to 20mm with the setting tool to match. Buttons in resin, wood, metal and shell. Zips by the metre and by the piece, nylon and metal, closed and open ended. Hook and loop by the roll, sew-on and self adhesive. Eyelets, grommets, D rings, slide buckles, overall clips and suspender clips for bag making and workwear.

What sits next to what

Then the tools that make the work faster: sewing clips that hold a seam without pinholes, rotary blades in 28mm and 45mm, tailor's chalk, tracing wheels, bobbins by the dozen, seam rippers with a guard. Iron-on patches, appliqué and bias tape finish the aisle. None of it is decorative on its own, which is exactly the point — it is all in service of the fabric.

Questions we get at the fasteners shelf

Do the snap fasteners need a press?

The four-part snaps do; sew-on and plastic resin snaps do not. Each listing says which kind it is, and the press-fit packs name the die size they expect.

Are the patches iron-on or sew-on?

Most are iron-on with a stitchable backing, so you can press them and then sew the edge on anything that goes through a washing machine weekly.

How much trim should I buy for a hem?

Measure the hem and add a tenth plus a hand's width. Bias tape and piping lose length at every corner, and a short run cannot be joined invisibly.
