How to set up a desk that stays tidy on its own

Tidy desks are not a personality type. They are a set of decisions about where things live, made once.

Every object needs an address

A desk gets cluttered because objects have nowhere assigned. Start by listing what lands on the surface in a normal week — pens, a notebook, a phone, a charger, mail, a mug, a pass. Each one needs a holder, a tray or a hook. Anything without an address will end up in the middle of the desk, and the middle of the desk is where work is supposed to happen.

Cable first, because cable is the worst of it

Clip the cables to the back edge before you buy anything else. A cable tray under the desk and four adhesive clips along the rear edge remove most of the visual noise and all of the snagging. Do this before the lamp and the riser, because both will add cable of their own.

Light across, not behind

A lamp behind the monitor throws glare; a lamp directly overhead throws shadow onto your own hands. Put the light in from the side, at about shoulder height, on an adjustable arm so it can be moved for paper work. Warmer light in the evening, cooler during the day, if the lamp allows it.

Trays stack, piles do not

A stack of letter trays holds the same paper as a pile and tells you which layer is which. Two trays — in and done — beat five labelled ones, because five invites sorting instead of finishing. Empty the bottom tray on a fixed day.

Weight is what keeps a holder in place

A pen holder that travels every time you reach past it will be abandoned within a month. Look for a weighted base or a non-slip foot. The same applies to a phone stand and a document holder — if it moves when nudged, it is a decoration rather than a holder.
