Knitting, crochet & needlework — how we pick and size them

A yarn project fails at its small parts far more often than at its yarn. A marker that slips, a hook with a burr on the throat, a hoop that will not hold tension — each of those costs an evening. This aisle is our answer to those three. Our crochet hooks are polished at the throat and sized in both metric and US letters. Knitting needles come in bamboo, aluminium and steel, straight, circular and double pointed, with the diameter laser marked rather than printed, because printed sizes wear off.

What sits next to what

Stitch markers, row counters, needle gauges, yarn bobbins, darning needles and stitch holders are the rest of it. Embroidery hoops run from 3 inch to 12 inch in wood and plastic, and cross stitch supplies — floss organisers, thread winders, needle threaders, waste canvas — sit alongside them. If a project lives in a bag between sessions, pick a holder before you need one.

Questions we get at the hooks shelf

Are hook sizes marked in millimetres or letters?

Both. Every hook carries the metric size on the shank and the US letter in the listing, because pattern writers use whichever they grew up with.

Will stitch markers fit a chunky hook?

The locking markers open to roughly 6mm of yarn, which covers worsted and most chunky weights. For jumbo yarn take the larger split rings rather than forcing a small one.

What hoop size suits a first embroidery?

Six to eight inches. Small enough to hold in one hand for an evening, big enough that a simple motif finishes without remounting the fabric halfway through.
