The painting, drawing & printmaking aisle at the PATIKIL counter

Painting, drawing & printmaking — how we pick and size them

Paint is cheap, time is not, and most of the time lost at a paint bench goes to handling. So this aisle is weighted toward the handling. Brush sets in nylon, hog bristle and synthetic sable for acrylic, watercolour and oil. Palette knives, mixing trays, wells and ceramic palettes. Brush washers and holders that let a brush dry bristle down. Easels and board clips. Colour pencils, blending stumps, erasers that lift rather than smear.

What sits next to what

Printmaking shares the aisle: lino cutters with changeable blades, barens, brayers, ink pads, stencils in mylar and plastic, and the stamps and embossing tools that cross over into paper craft. If you work in more than one medium, buy the holders once and the consumables as you go — the holders outlast three sets of paint.

Questions we get at the brushes shelf

Are the brushes for acrylic or watercolour?

The synthetic rounds and flats handle both; the stiff bristle sets are for acrylic and oil. Listings name the hair type, which is the part that decides it.

Can the stencils be washed and reused?

Yes. The mylar stencils wash in warm water and keep their edge for years, as long as you do not scrape dried acrylic off them with a blade.

What goes into a printmaking starter set?

A brayer, a carving handle with spare blades, a small ink plate and a block. Paper comes from the paper aisle, because what you print on changes more than what you print with.
